The story behind the cloth

The Story Behind

Every Fold

In Hawaiian, kuleana is often understood as responsibility, stewardship, and one’s sphere of care. At PIKO, that principle guides how we serve others: by strengthening small businesses from the inside out, investing in youth entrepreneurs, and helping build stronger communities through meaningful work.

The Kuleana Cloth is one expression of that mission. Created through PIKO’s Youth Entrepreneur Program, each cloth reflects care, creativity, and the discipline of making something by hand. The collection began with Nainoa and Olena Nikaido, PIKO’s first youth ambassadors, who handcrafted each cloth using Japanese Shibori technique.

More than a product, this cloth represents opportunity in motion. Every purchase helps invest in the next generation of makers, leaders, and business builders. 100% of net proceeds from each sale support the PIKO Youth Entrepreneurship Program.

What is Japanese Shibori?

The Kuleana Cloth is created using a traditional Japanese tie-dye technique known for its intentional folds, bindings, and dyeing process that produces organic, one-of-a-kind patterns.

Rather than being printed, the fabric is carefully shaped and bound before dye is applied, allowing the design to emerge through the process itself.

No two cloths are ever exactly the same, making each Kuleana Cloth a unique expression of craftsmanship, patience, and care.
