The Story Behind Every Fold
Each Kuleana Cloth starts with young entrepreneurs learning an ancient Japanese technique called Shibori - the fold, the bind, the dip, the reveal. This batch was designed and named by the Nashua PALS program. They learned Shibori over the summer break, created each cloth by hand, and named this collection Summer Flowers at the Beach.
But that's just the beginning. Our youth ambassadors then take the lead on everything: they dye in the studio, run the market table, pack the orders, manage the mail, and talk to customers. They're not just making a product—they're learning pricing, inventory, customer service, and real business skills by doing it.
Every single dollar from your purchase goes straight into the Youth Entrepreneurship Program. We use it for materials, maker wages, hands-on training, and scholarships so the next generation of young entrepreneurs can start their own journey. Kuleana — the Hawaiian concept of responsibility, isn't just our name. It's how we show up: by investing in youth who are already building their futures.

Hand-dyed by the Nashua PALs, as part of the PIKO Legacy Foundation’s Youth Entrepreneurship Program, every cloth in the Kuleana Collection carries a story that is uniquely its own. After experimenting with unique dye patterns in the Maker’s Workshop, the young creators studied their finished towels and shared what the designs inspired in them. Together, they voted on the name that best captured their collective creative vision: Summer Flowers at the Beach.
Beyond learning product design and marketing, the youth behind this batch are learning vital, real-world financial literacy. Through every sale, makers practice "The Split" - dividing earnings into four dedicated buckets: Give, Save, Spend, and Invest. They learn firsthand about compounding growth and how the habits they build today create long-term financial independence for tomorrow.

- Will the color survive the wash? Yes. The cloths are pre-washed and pre-shrunk so they won't fade or shrink in the laundry.
- What happens to the money? It funds the next cohort's start: materials, wages, training, and the next workshop. One batch pays for the next group of young people to learn the craft and make a batch of their own
- What does Kuleana mean? Kuleana is a Hawaiian word often understood as responsibility, stewardship, and one’s area of care. It speaks to what we are entrusted to tend and honor with integrity and respect.
- What if I don't love it? Tell us within 30 days and we will replace it or refund it.
What is Japanese Shibori?
The Kuleana Cloth is created using a traditional Japanese tie-dye technique known for its intentional folds, bindings, and dyeing process that produces organic, one-of-a-kind patterns.
Rather than being printed, the fabric is carefully shaped and bound before dye is applied, allowing the design to emerge through the process itself.
No two cloths are ever exactly the same, making each Kuleana Cloth a unique expression of craftsmanship, patience, and care.
